Project Overview
Impots.bj serves as the digital hub for Benin's tax authority, the Direction Générale des Impôts (DGI), providing essential services such as tax information, e-services (e.g., MECEF invoice verification and tombola), fiscal deadlines, news, and user guides. This project focused on a comprehensive frontend redesign to transform the site's UI/UX, making it more intuitive, responsive, and user-friendly while maintaining its role as a key government resource for taxpayers.
Challenge
The original site featured a functional but outdated interface with repetitive content, basic navigation, and limited mobile responsiveness, which hindered user engagement for diverse audiences like individuals, businesses, and professionals. Key challenges included simplifying complex tax processes, improving accessibility for non-tech-savvy users, integrating interactive e-services seamlessly, and ensuring compliance with government standards in a French-primary environment.
Solution
- UI/UX Redesign: Overhauled the interface with a clean, modern design using contemporary typography, intuitive icons, and a responsive layout optimized for desktop and mobile. Enhanced sections like Accueil (home) with streamlined alerts, services, and news feeds; improved categorization for user types (e.g., Particulier, Entreprise).
- Features: Integrated interactive elements such as invoice verification tools, tombola participation, fiscal calendars, FAQ sections, and contact forms. Added user-friendly navigation for Actualités (news), Communiqués, and Réformes, with "Lire la suite" buttons for better flow.
- Technology: Utilized modern frontend frameworks (e.g., Bootstrap for responsiveness, JavaScript for interactivity) while ensuring integration with backend e-services like MECEF and YouTube embeds.
- Content Strategy: Focused on clear, segmented content for different user profiles, with emphasis on modernization themes like digital invoice issuance and anti-fraud tools to build trust and efficiency.
Results
The redesigned frontend positioned impots.bj as a more accessible and efficient platform, reducing user friction in tax compliance and boosting engagement with e-services. It supports Benin's digital governance initiatives, providing a seamless experience for fiscal obligations and updates, such as 2026 election-related communiqués and fiscal deadlines.
Key Learnings
Redesigning government sites requires balancing functionality with simplicity—prioritizing mobile-first UI/UX significantly improves accessibility in regions like Benin, where diverse users rely on clear, intuitive digital tools for essential services.
